Song Info:

Singer: Eva Cassidy
Songwriter: Sting
Album: Found on both "Live at Blues Alley" and "Songbird"

The song was recorded live on January 3,1996 at Blues Alley, a small nightclub in Washington, DC, for the album "Live at Blues Alley."

Fields of Gold was later released on the 1998 album "Songbird," a compilation album of songs from Eva's three previously released CDs. In November 2001, Songbird went Gold in the United States, which means it has sold 500,000 units. In recognition for Michelle calling attention to Eva's music through her Fields of Gold program, Blix Street Records presented a Gold record to her. The Gold record plaques contains a hologram, used to prevent unauthorized duplication of awards, which appears on the presentation plate, along with the dedication and mini-album cover. Michelle was the second person given the Gold record, after Eva's parents.

As well as going Gold in the US, Songbird has gone gold in Australia and Norway, and triple platinum in the United Kingdom.

In addition to Michelle's Fields of Gold program, Eva's rendition of Fields of Gold has been heard in other places, such as on All My Children, Dawson's Creek, Touched By an Angel, Judging Amy, the movie "Flight of Fancy," and an ad for "Cancer Research UK" in England. The producer of Dawson's Creek was looking for "a song with a powerful and bittersweet emotional pull, to speak of lives changing, of the memories of growing up, of precious moments come and gone." This describes the song and the program perfectly.

Sting, the songwriter and original singer of Fields of Gold, said the following about Eva's cover of the song:

A lot of people have covered my songs. And it's a strange emotion, you know, because your own songs are like your own babies. I mean you might hear someone reinterpreting them and maybe you don't agree with what they've done. But this version was just so pure, so excellent, that I was deeply moved by it, and so happy that she covered it. Eva's is one of the best versions of my song I've ever heard...There is something about her voice - a quality - that you can't really put into words. It's a magical quality. People respond to its purity. It suggests something ethereal-- something unattainable.

Sung by Eva Cassidy
Lyrics by Sting

You'll remember me, when the west wind moves
Among the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in it's jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold

So she took her love for to gaze a while
Among the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold

Will you stay with me, will you be my love
Among the fields of barley
And you can tell the sun in it's jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold

I never made promises lightly
There've been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left
We will walk in fields of gold

We'll walk in fields of gold

Many years have past, since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
As you lie in fields of gold

You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Among the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in it's jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold

When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold
