A surprise magazine mention I found today while leafing through some magazines at the book store. In the June 2002 issue of Real Philly magazine is an article about Philadelphia Charge soccer player Heather Mitts, with the following quote:

In fact, nearly three years ago, when she [Heather Mitts] was an even lesser known college soccer player at the University of Florida, Aloette Cosmetics named Mitts one of the five most attractive female athletes in American sports, behind volleyball star Gabrielle Reece, basketballer Lisa Leslie, fellow soccer star Mia Hamm, and figure skater Michelle Kwan. I originally posted about that poll when it came out in December 1999. Here's what they said about Michelle, "She is gorgeous even in the midst of competition. Her body and facial features seem perfectly sculpted, and she never loses her composure." You can read more about it in the press release.
I received the June/July 2002 issue of Skating Magazine in the mail yesterday. (This magazine is only available by subscription.) Here are the mentions of Michelle in the magazine:

  • Article about Michelle winning the 2002 Readers' Choice Figure Skater of the Year. Includes a picture of waving after Scheherazade at the Olympics. On the same page is a few paragraphs about Michelle winning the Sullivan award...page 6
  • Ad for Crystal Signatures, the company that made Michelle's Readers' Choice award. In the middle of the ad is a picture of Michelle's award...page 7
  • Article about the Great American Figure Skating Challenge...page 8
  • "Kid Spotlight", where the skater says she got involved in skating after watching Michelle doing a layback on TV...page 64
  • Article about the Ice Angelzz synchronized skating team that skated in the opening and closing ceremonies at the Olympics. The article says, "Being face to face with some of their skating idols topped the list of the most exciting things that happened to these skaters during the Olympics. Kelsey Barnes, for instance, received a hug from Michelle Kwan."...pages 68-69

greenwolf posted the following magazine mention on the MK Forum: (Thanks greenwolf!) In the May 28 issue of "ABC Soaps in depth" with Steve Burton on the cover, there is an interview with Erin Hershey who plays Alison on "Port Charles" There's a favorite things box they ask:

Favorite Olympic Sport: "Ice-skating! I just rode home on a plane with Michelle Kwan, and I was too shy to say hi."

More on the Gold Record that Michelle received for Eva Cassidy's Songbird album, which I wrote about earlier. Laura, of evacassidy.org, e-mailed me that on page 70 of the May 4, 2002 issue of Billboard magazine is a picture of Michelle, Eva's parents, and the president of Blix Street Records during the presentation. leon scanned it in. Check it out! Under the picture, it says the following: (Thanks Laura and leon!) Golden Figure Eights

Four-time World Ladies Figure Skating Champion, six-time U.S. Ladies Figure Skating Champion, and two time Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan includes "Fields of Gold" by the late Eva Cassidy in her current exhibition program. She has been performing to the piece since last summer, including her 2002 Showcase of Champions performance at the Olympics in Salt Lake City following the figure skating competition. Here, Barbara Cassidy, right, and Hugh Cassidy, left, parents of Eva, and Blix Street Records president Bill Straw present Kwan with a gold record for Cassidy's Songbird during a recent stop in Baltimore.

CaraMora posted on the MK Forum that Michelle is in the June issue of Seventeen Magazine! On page 63, there is an article about bronze make-up. There are pictures of different kinds of bronze makeup. The price of each is listed under the picture. At the top of the page, it says "Winning the bronze is good. Wearing it is even better. (priceless)" It then has a picture of Michelle wearing her Olympic bronze medal. (Thanks CaraMora!)
magicpixie posted on the MK Forum that Michelle is in the May issue of Vogue magazine. Michelle is mentioned on the cover of the magazine, where it says "Hot Weather Style Strategies from..Michelle Kwan." On page 214 is the following: (Thanks magicpixie!) Michelle Kwan, Figure Skater: "I like to look sophisticated and professional but fun and summery at the same time. So I think up some unexpected combinations: a blazer with a lacy little dress, my favorite Prada pieces with brights shoes, a casual suit with funky sandals. Above all, since I'm only five-two, I rely on my Jimmy Choo heels. They make me look at least a LITTLE taller."

I received the April 2002 issue of Skating Magazine in the mail yesterday. (This magazine is only available by subscription.) Here are the mentions of Michelle in the magazine:

  • Picture of Michelle smiling while landing a jump during Rachmaninoff at the Olympics with the caption "Olympic bronze medalist Michelle Kwan."...page 2

  • Ad for ABC Sports coverage of figure skating that says in bold "America's Pride." Underneath is a picture of the top 4 ladies on the podium at 2002 Nationals...back cover

A few magazine mentions. On page 10 of the April 12, 2002 issue of Entertainment Weekly, in the "Flashes" section, is the article Between 'Friends'. It says, "It's the question of the season: Should Jennifer Aniston's preggers Rachel end up with her ex, David Schwimmer's sensitive prof Ross -- or Matt LeBlanc's lovable hunk Joey? As usual, Hollywood has the answers." Eighteen celebrities are quoted with their answers, and one is Michelle! Other celebrities are listed along with what TV show/movie they are in, but it's just Michelle Kwan...no need to say she's a figure skater. Michelle said, "'Ross, but Joey's very cute and funny. I have no idea!'' LOL, Michelle, I agree!

Also, several posted on the MK Forum that Michelle is mentioned in the April 23, 2002 issue of Family Circle magazine. On page 27 is an article titled "Girl Power - The Surprising Link Between Sports and Success," which talks about girls and their parents' attitudes towards sports. In the section called "What Makes a Female Champion", there is a small picture of Michelle doing a layback, and a paragraph about here where she talks about how expensive skating is, and how her parents sacrificed for her. She also talked about how they made sure skating was what she wanted to do, and she ends with that is why it is important for girls to have fun.

mano posted the following on the MK Forum (Thanks mano!):

This was from the kids section of The Record, a NJ paper. It's part of their Sports Illustrated Kids Weekly and it's under the heading "Meet the Athlete and it appeared on Sunday 3/31/02.

Quote: Michelle Kwan Winning is no longer a thrilling surprise for figure skater Michelle Kwan. Winning is planned. It is sacrificed for. In short, it is expected. Since 1992, Michelle has won 48 of the 76 competitions she has entered, for a winning percentage of .632. How good is that? The New York Yankees' winning percentage from 1992 through 2001 is .577. Michelle's four World championships are the second-most ever won by a female U.S. skater. She has five National titles. As of February 1, 2002, she had 30 perfect marks in major competition, more than any female skater since 1960. It's exhilirating to see the pure joy with which Michelle skates when she's at her best," says U.S. figure-skating judge Jessica Bussgang. "She reaches every person in the audience, even in the last row of the bleachers. She skates from her soul."

There is a small article about Michelle in the April 8, 2002 issue of People magazine. On page 24 is a "Pop Quiz" with Michelle, where they ask her several questions about her new Disney deal. With the article is a picture of Michelle in the kiss and cry after Rachmaninoff at the Olympics Dave scanned in the article and picture. Check it out! (Thanks Dave!)
As I wrote earlier, Michelle is in the April 1, 2002 issue of People magazine. It is an article about the Roots gear at the Olympics. Michelle is the only American they show. Dave scanned in the picture. Check it out!

Also, in the March 22, 2002 edition of USA Today, in the upper right hand corner of the front page of the Sports section, they had an ad for Worlds. The ad was of Michelle from Rachmaninoff at Nationals. Dave also scanned this in. Check it out! (Thanks Dave!)

In the April 1, 2002 issue of People magazine is a picture of Michelle in her team USA Olympic outfit on page 86. There is also a letter to the editor about Michelle.
I received the March 2002 issue of Skating Magazine in the mail yesterday. (This magazine is only available by subscription.) Here are the mentions of Michelle in the magazine:

  • Cover
  • Ad for Ice Castle, with a picture of Michelle from Song of the Black Swan...page 3

TwinnerA posted on the MK Forum that Michelle is in the March 25, 2002 issue of US Weekly. On page 66 is a picture from Fields of Gold from either Nationals or the Olympics, where they mention Worlds. (Thanks TwinnerA!)
Michelle is mentioned In the March 15, 2002 issue of Entertainment Weekly. In Jim Mullen's "Hot Sheet", which is "What the country is talking about this week..." he writes stuff that supposed to be funny. It's nothing that I usually burst out loud laughing, though. Anyway, #2 on the list says "Ice Skaters Sarah Hughes is on a Wheaties box and Michelle Kwan is a spokeswoman for Disney. The Canadian pair is now complaining to Wheaties and Disney." I thought it was nice they mentioned Michelle.
I received my March/April 2002 issue of Blades on Ice the other day. It says it's an Olympics issue. Love the timeliness of the magazine. The Michelle mentions in this magazine:

  • Picture of Scheherazade at Nationals...pages 3
  • Several articles (mostly positive) in the fanfare section about Michelle...page 7
  • Color picture of Rachmaninoff at Nationals...page 24

  • Article about the Grand Prix Finals. Includes a picture from Scheherazade...pages 18-20
  • The ballot for the 2002 Readers' Choice Eligible Figure Skater of the Year Award. This year, you can't vote by e-mail...you have to send in the ballot. So if you get the magazine, don't forget to send it in! The deadline is April 10. They list the previous winners of the award, and Michelle is the only multiple winner of this award, winning in 1994, 1996, 1998, and 1999, and 2001...page 59
  • Ad for ABC's coverage of Worlds, which includes a picture of Michelle from 2001 Worlds, with her medal and waving flowers. The caption says "Reigning and Four Time World Champion Michelle Kwan."...back cover

n the March 11, 2002 issue of People magazine, there is a picture of Michelle. In the Style Watch, is an article titled "Making Their Mark." It says "Their triple salchows and death spirals wer graded and rated, but what about the Olympic figure skaters' sartorial skills? Here's a rundown of the looks that flew--and flopped--on the ice." In the Winners Circle, they have a picture of Michelle during Fields of Gold (though I think they could have found a better picture...there's a shadow on her face.) Under her picture, it says "Michelle Kwan struck gold in a sleek Vera Wang."
Michelle was in the Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002 issue of Women's Wear Daily. The article was about the costumes at the Olympics. ponytail sent me a scan of the cover, check it out! (Thanks ponytail!)
There is a picture of Michelle marching in the opening ceremonies in the Feb. 18, 2002 issue of Time magazine. Dave sent me a scan of it. Check it out! (Thanks Dave!)
A couple of magazine mentions. Michelle is in the February 18, 2002 issue of ESPN Magazine. It is a two page spread of her Scheherazade spiral at Nationals, with small tidbits around the edges.

Also, Michelle is in the March 2002 issue of Oxygen magazine, a fitness magazine. Her name is mentioned on the cover (which is how I spotted it at the book store!). It's an Olympic preview (nothing new.) In the table of contents, they have the Red Violin picture from this AMI Cover. In the Olympic article, they have a full page picture of her end pose during Lyra Angelica at 1998 Nationals.

Michelle will be on the cover of the Feb. 18, 2002 issue of Newsweek! It goes on sale on newsstands on Monday, Feb. 11. Check out the cover, and the article, Kwan Song.
My site is going to be listing in the technology section of the Feb 5, 2002 edition of the Gannett newspapers. There will also be a picture of Michelle doing a spiral from Rachmaninoff at Nationals. The local papers that are part of the gannett papers are listed on their site. The national gannett newspaper is USA Today. Here's what it says about the site:

The Michelle Kwan Fan Page!
(heatherw.com/mk)

(Four mouse clicks: An authoritative site with up-to-date information and high-quality graphics. Bookmark it.)

This Web site couldn't be better. It features up-to-date Michelle Kwan news, including photos of her practicing before the U.S. Figure Skating Championship in Los Angeles and an archive on Kwan news stories going back to 1995. There also are more than 80 RealPlayer audio and video clips of Kwan performances and interviews. This fan page even lists every song to which Kwan has skated.

As I posted earlier, Michelle is on the cover of the Feb. 9-15, 2002 issue of TV Guide. In addition to the three pictures on the magazine's site (the Cover, a picture of her wearing a blue top, and a picture of doing a spiral during Scheherazade at Nationals), the article also contains a picture of her in the kiss and cry at Nationals after the long program with her dad, and a picture of the 2001 Worlds podium that was in black and white (the continuation of the article was in the newspaper / listings part of the magazine, while the first part is in the magazine part...if that makes any sense!) It's a nice article, and the cover picture is so nice. It's on newstands now, so don't forget to buy it!
The February 8, 2002 issue of Entertainment Weekly has a small guide to the Olympics on TV. The small comments for each day are, I guess, supposed to be funny. None seem to be too positive. But anyway, for February 21, they have this picture of Michelle from last year's Nationals, and it says:

Figure Skating: Ladies Long Program

Michelle Kwan's routine revolves around the story of Scheherazade, a young woman trying to avoid execution. It's apt in the sense that if Kwan doesn't deliver the goods, her gold medal dreams will be dead and buried. Wow, that was morbid.

Dante e-mailed me that Michelle is on the cover of the February 1, 2002 issue of Weekly Reader. Inside is an article on the Olympics, but it only has a brief mention of Michelle and Sarah Hughes as Olympic gold medal contenders. Dante also sent me a scan of the cover. Check it out! (Thanks Dante!)
mari19 posted on the MK Forum that Michelle is on the cover of Girlfriends L.A, a clothing catalog. Dave later posted website and other information. Check out the cover of the catalog. You could request a free current catalog from their site, but they never sent it to me. They also had a contest, ending February 25, where you could win a signed book and picture of Michelle. Finally, the site has a small biography of Michelle. (Thanks mari19 and Dave!)
meems3 posted the following on the MK Forum about Michelle appearing on the cover of the February/March 2002 issue of A. Magazine. (Thanks meems3!):

Didn't know if anyone else saw it but it's a picture we've seen before - MK behind the flowers with spaghetti strap looking camisole top. It's a beautiful shot! There are 2 more pics inside and it's an interview by Benjamin Cho who the article claims is "...absolutely, positvely Kwan's biggest fan...". I thought that was cute (although untrue b/c I am of course - ahem) Check out the cover of the magazine, and a scan of the first page of the article, which is a picture of Michelle surrounded by flowers.
Robin e-mailed me the following Michelle magazine mentions: (Thanks Robin!)

Just thought I would let you know that Michelle was in Boys' Life which is a magazine fo Boy Scouts. They had a section about the athletes in the Winter Olympics. There is a small but beautiful headshot of her with the following caption.

America's Sweetheart
This month Michelle Kwan will attempt to become the third U.S. woman to win two Olympic medals in figure skating. Not that she needs to. She earns $4 million a year in salary and endorsements. Her name is on a video game. She made the People magazine's "most beautiful people' list. her book is in its sixth printing. She has been a skating superstar since 1995.

I'm not sure if this is available on newstands as my son has the subscription through boy scouts. They do have a website www.boyslife.org

She was also mentioned in Scholastic News which is a weekly 4-page news Magazine for first graders. My guess is that she is probably in the the ones for other grades too, but first grade is what I happen to teach. It just gives me another opportunity to talk about Michelle!

I keep forgetting to post this (a friend told me just before I left for Nationals), but my Michelle site is listed in the February 2002 issue of Yahoo Life magazine. Here's what it says about the site:

The Alter Of Kwan

Every skater should be as lucky as to have a fan like Heather Winfield, whose Michelle Kwan Fan Page! [heatherw.com/mk] is as thorough a fan site as a star could hope to have. Kwan, who won the silver in Nagano, is still the brightest hope for the U.S. gold. Read all about Kwan and her past performances, and buy the music she's used in her past routines.

I received my January 2002 issue of Skating Magazine in the mail recently. (This magazine is only available by subscription.) Here are the mentions of Michelle in the magazine:

  • Cover (group picture from Skating Tribute)
  • Yoplait ad...page 7
  • Small article that says Michelle was one of the finalists for the 2001 WSF Sportswomen of the Year award, but the winner was Stacy Dragila...page 9
  • Article about the Olympics which says that Michelle was one of the figure skaters set to carry the torch...pages 12-14
  • Article about Kristi Yamaguchi, where she says that Michelle is someone who she really admires, "someone who has just been so solid, been there at the top for so long and handled the pressure amazingly."...pages 16-17
  • Article about Skate Canada...pages 23-24
  • Ad for Ice Castle, with a picture of Michelle from Song of the Black Swan...page 55
  • Ad for her new book, Michelle Kwan: My Special Moments...page 56
  • Kids Spotlight, where the skater, Christina Booker, says her favorite skater is Michelle. "She's a great role model. I've always liked her and the way she skates."...page 68
  • Ad for ABC's coverage of Nationals, which is a picture of Michelle's Scheherazade Skate America...back cover

I also received my January/February 2002 issue of Blades on Ice. The Michelle mentions in this magazine:

  • Article about Kristi Yamaguchi, where she's asked for advice for the Olympic winners, "For most it will be a different world after a gold medal, but if it's Michelle KWan, I don't know how much more famous she can be." They also write about her Hallmark snow globe, and Kristi says that she "sent them photos and they made a 3-D figure of me from that." So maybe that's the same thing Michelle did for her snow globe?...pages 9-13
  • Article about the Skate America and Skate Canada. Includes a picture of Scheherazade at Skate America....pages 20-28
  • Article about the Grand Prix Finals...pages 38-41
  • Article about the Masters...pages 46-48
  • Article about the Skating Tribute. Includes a picture of her skating to Fields of Gold...pages 64-67

Jasmine e-mailed me the other day about Michelle being in the February 2002 issue of Sports Illustrated for Kids. The front cover says Winter Olympics Preview. Here's what Jasmine said (Thanks Jasmine!):

The article about Michelle is called "Everything but the Gold" and it just talks about how she's won every title except the Olympic one. There is actually a tiny picture of her on the cover of the magazine on the left side. I just grabbed the article from my brother so i can tell you what pictures there are. There's one of her on the podium at the 98 olympics, and one at the end of lyra angelica during the 98 nationals. Plus, there's one of her in the blue costume for her Fields of Gold program. The poster is of her in the black costume for Scherezade. I found the picture on your site. The picture at the beginning of the article is of her during World's last year I think. She's skating Song of the Black Swan. I found a picture of it on your ! site again In addition, there is a picture of her with Frank when she's younger, which I already told you about, plus one of her on a rubber mat at a ballet bar type thing. I'm not sure what you call it. The table of contents also has a picture of michelle wearing her very first costume for Scherezade. I'm not sure which competion it is...Skate America or Goodwill Games.
Lucy25 posted on MK Forum that there is an article about Nationals in the January 28, 2002 issue of People magazine. Here's what Lucy said was in the article:

I haven't seen this posted, but this week's People has a three page coverage of Nationals, with quite a few photos of Michelle (collision with Sasha, spiral from LP, waving to the crowd at exhibitions). It is a coverage of all the Olympic team members, but the focus is on Michelle. The article is very positive of Michelle (of course) and I THINK ( I will have to go through it again) that no where in the article does it mention that she doesn't have a coach! This is a first! The article mentions the Sasha collision and her relationship with Brad Ference. Here's a quote from Karen Kwan, "He knows what it takes for her to train. He's very supportive."

Jenny later posted that the magazine also includes Michelle's Yoplait ad, and a picture of the top 3 ladies on the podium in the table of contents section. (Thanks Lucy25 and Jenny!)

Also, I didn't get a chance to add just before I went to LA about a Michelle mention in the January 14, 2002 issue of People. On page 113 of the magazine, in Style Watch, there is a small article about her necklace, basically saying the same thing that I wrote about earlier from the Today show on January 3. There is a picture of Michelle doing a spiral during the Skating Tribute finale with Angela in the background.

Michelle is in the February 2002 issue of Parents magazine. sw posted the following on the MK Forum (Thanks sw!):

There is a small bit about MK called, "Michelle Kwan's advice for young athletes." I don't have a scanner, so I'll type what it says:

America's favorite ice-skater will be going for the gold this month at the Olympics in Salt Lake City. Here, the secrets of her success.

*What influence did your parents have on your skating? MK: My mother and father have been great role models - they came to the U.S. with nothing and sacrificed a lot to give my brother, sister, and me the opportunities they never had. At the same time, they were never "stage parents." They made sure we truly enjoyed what we were doing." *

You're idolized by young skaters all around the country. Any advice for them? MK: Have fun and enjoy what you're doing. Though it's important to have big dreams, don't forget to set small goals - and celebrate your successes - along the way. And if you really want something, you have to work for it. Giving my all during practice helps me stay mentally tough for competitions.

tteller posted the following on the MK Forum (Thanks tteller!):

MK in Winter 2002 Disney Adventures mag x 2!!

Our Michelle is featured twice in the new Winter 2002 Disney Adventures magazine. The cover features the Carter brothers (Nick and Aaron). On pg 32 is a half-page article and picture (gold sparkly costume...cannot date it off the top of my head) in a section called "The Olympians To Watch". It lists Michelle's sport/age/hometown/road to the games/why she's watchable/fan fact. It is as flattering a preview as I've recently read. (Editorial comment: I still think the avg. casual fan of the Olympics and figure skating hopes Michelle does well at the Olympics even if some others are less positive about it). On pg. 23, there is an ad for the Michelle Kwan presents Skating Dreams series with a picture of 5 of the book covers, a picture of Michelle used on the book (back cover). Cool!!!!

The January 21, 2002 issue of Time magazine contains a picture of Michelle. Dave sent me a scan. Check it out! (Thanks Dave!)
Diane posted the following about Michelle appearing in the February 2002 issue of SI For Women on the MK Forum (Thanks Diane!):

2 full page pics of MK in SI for Women

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but I haven't seen it here on the forum. In the current issue of Sports Illustrated for Women (with Picabo Street on the cover) there's a whole Olympic Preview section with an article on MK and a full page pic of her from last years Nationals LP (the silvery dress). There are also lots of little pictures, from Nagano, this years SA, one with Karen, and a pic of Brad too (not with MK). And there's also the Yoplait ad featuring Michelle.

I received my January/February 2002 issue of International Figure Skating in the mail today. I have so much I have to scan in, I'll try to do it sometime this week. Here are the mentions of Michelle in the magazine:

  • Cover
  • Ad for 2002 COI...page 3
  • Picture from photo shoot in Table of Contents...page 5
  • Letter from the publisher includes "With this issue dedicated as our Olympic preview issue, it seems fitting to have, as the subject of our cover story, that one individual who has propelled our sport more in the last four years than any other skater --- four time World Women's Champion Michelle Kwan. Very few of us will ever know the pressures of being a World Champion or an Olympic favorite. Who are we to judge what promplted her decisions to make a major change in her training? The world will see soon enough the results."...page 8
  • Ad for Ice Castle, with a picture of Michelle from Song of the Black Swan...page 11
  • Ad for the book, Figure Skating Now, the cover of which includes Michelle...page 12
  • Article titled "New Attitude." It's a nice article, with so many good/cute things, I don't know what to quote without just posting the whole article, LOL. So, check out some of my favorite quotes from the article, which I posted on a separate page. Includes 2 pictures from the same cover photo shoot. The first picture is a full page. In the second picture, it seems like she was tossing her head around, and her hair is sort of flying...page 24-26
  • Picture with Kyoko Ina and John Zimmerman before the Skating Tribute...page 37
  • Olympic preview article titled "Quest for Gold." On the first page of the article is a picture of the opening pose of East of Eden. The part on Michelle is basically just quotes from the article earlier in the magazine. Includes picture of Michelle surrounded by flowers...pages 38-49

In the January/February 2002 issue of Modern Maturity, there is an article about Frank Carroll. With the article is the picture of Michelle with Frank during practice at Worlds. Here is what Frank says about Michelle:

Michelle's Departure She came to me in tears, we hugged, and told each other that we loved each other. Michelle really has a strong feeling that if she is to succeed she has to be strong enough to do it by herself. Whether I'm with her or not, I want her to win. I think she's the best skater in the world. She has the overall look, the posture, the artistry, the charisma. It's a matter of how hungry she is.
