posted on the following on the MK Forum (Thanks CaraMora):
Michelle has been
in the last two issues of cosmo girl. Her scholarship ad was in
the Nov. issue and there is a pick of her on page 92 in the Dec/Jan
issue. It's from The Kid premiere. She is on a page with a whole
bunch of other women it's talking about Cosmogirl of the year. She
didn't get one of the spots but she's on a page with a bunch of
impressive women, her pic is right above Babe Didrikson.
I
finally received my November 2001 issue of Skating

Another
magazine mention of Michelle. In the December/January 2002 issue
of Teen
People, in the "what's next" article, Michelle is mentioned
on page 8 as the runner up athlete. The article says, "Top gal athletes
- Mia Hamm, Venus and Serena Williams, Anna Kournikova Runner up:
Michelle Kwan" It is picked by their teen people trendspotters.
(Thanks Jamie!)
Another
magazine mention of Michelle. twrlytwzl posted on MK Forum the following:
(Thanks twrlytwzl!):
I just got my Newsweek
today, the November 5th issue and on page74 there is an article
and a perfectly beautiful pic of MK doing her spiral. The article
is as follows:
A Solitary Skater
It's like the Yankees deciding to play the World Series without
Joe Torre. Just four months before the SLC Olympics where she's
favored to win a gold medal, Michelle Kwan announced her split from
longtime coach Frank Carroll. The 21-year old has decided to coach
herself, a move unprecedented in competitive figure skating. In
almost 10 years together, Carroll has guided Kwan to four world
championships, but her early performances this season have been
lackluster, passionless and, most important, losing. (in her first
solo outing at last weekend's Skate America, she won the short program
despite botching a routine jump). The split came amid hugs and tears
but Carroll says, without a coherent explanation. "I'm in complete
shock," he says. "I didn't think there was anything we couldn't
work through." Kwan says it was simply time "to skate alone, listen
to myself and see where it gets me." She'd better hope it gets her
to the medal podium on Feb. 21.
The picture with the
article is this
one from Skate America.
Several
magazine mentions of Michelle. tracey64 posted on MK Forum the following
two magazines with Michelle (Thanks tracey64!):
The Discovery Girls
magazine was the Aug/Sept 2001 issue and there was a little quiz
to see if you could name different sports stars on pages 22-23 and
Michelle was the second clue and there was a small picture of her.
The American Girl one is the
Nov/Dec 2001 issue and Michelle is on page 7 with a small but really
cute picture of her and it is about when she traced her hand last
year and turned it into a turkey for a fundraiser auction - it also
has a picture of her turkey. I don't think she better give up skating
to be a turkey artist though!!!Just kidding - her turkey was kind
of cute. Here is to better days and times ahead.
I don't know for sure,
but the turkey in the magazine may be this
one she made for charity.
tteller
posted the following on MK Forum about Michelle appearing in the
October 29, 2001 issue of Sports
Illustrated
(Thanks tteller!):
Michelle is mentioned
"Before Split" on page 72 of this weeks Sports Illustrated, dated
10-29-01 (NBA season preview issue...Michael Jordan on cover). The
article is a look ahead at the 2002 Winter olympics. One section
asks: "Does U.S. skating have Kwan-tity and quality? This years
group of US women's figure skaters sure does. Only three from the
superb quartet of Michelle Kwan, Sarah Hughes, Sasha Cohen, and
Angela Nikodinov will make the US team, which will be chosen following
the national championships in Los Angeles from Jan. 6 through 13.
Whichever three make the squad, look for two to join Russia's Irina
Sutskaya on the medal stand in Salt Lake City. Kwan, 21, has four
world titles to go with Olympic silver she won in Nagano in 1998.
She's a polished artist and sentimental favorite. Though she lacks
a signature trick, she rarely beats herself. The 16-year-old Hughes
has matured, shedding some of her on-ice giddiness to earn a world
bronze last March. She also has a immunity to pressure. Cohen, 17,
the 2000 US Silver medalist, has recovered from the fractured vertebra
that sidelined her last season and is working on a quadruple Salchow
that could tip the technical marks in her favor. Nikodinov, 21,
is perhaps the world's best spinner but is also a nervous competitor."
MoonKitty
posted on the MK Forum that there is an article about Michelle in
the November 2001 issue of Ladies'
Home Journal. Here's what she said about the article: (Thanks
MoonKitty!)
OMG and it shows
soooo many pix! It's in the My Life in Pictures section...with Michelle's
own words, plus the picture from the cover to her new book...with
her 1st SOTBS dress! Here's a quote that I like (and I would like
to make it my siggy!) "Surround yourself with loved ones. Whatever
happens in skating, you can always go home." Ah how very true!
It's the November 2001 issue, with the cast of The View on the cover.
The article is on page 58. It shows a baby pic, with her sister
and her brother posing with her, Her 1st title as a skater in 1987!,
the biggest fish she caught in Alaska in 1997, her Sabrina cameo,
with her dad in Helsinki at 99 Worlds, meeting prez Clinton (says
1996, but I think it is later...she has the post Nagano short haircut),
a pose from Taj Mahal, and the cover from her new book, Michelle
Kwan: My Special moments.

SL Magazine's Winter of Excellence 2002: (Thanks tteller!)
Michelle is mentioned.
along with many other Olympic hopefulls in Salt Lake Magazine's
Winter Of Excellence 2002. This issue was sent to my wife and I
by Coldwell Banker Real Estate as we are renting a home in SLC for
the last week of the Olympics (so we can see the Ladies skate and
the Exhibitions). It's a thick glossy paper (the kind they use when
the item is a "collectible") 216 pg. magazine. The cover price,
FYI, was $8.95. Anyway, Michelle is mentioned (without a picture...rats)
on page 108 in the section "Games People Play. A Rundown of the
2002 Winter Events". Under "Who To Watch", it says "For the women,
American Michelle Kwan will try to hold off Russians Irina Slutskayaand
[sic] and Maria Butyrskaya."

ad with Michelle is in the October 15, 2001 issue of Sports
Illustrated. (Thanks ykchan!)
The
same ad is also in the October 2001 issue of Sports

Michelle's upcoming season, program, etc, but from I hear, it is
not a positive article. With the article is this 1998 GWG
publicity picture.

REWARDS ad of Michelle in the classroom is in the November 2001
issues of Seventeen
and YM.
tteller
posted the following on the MK Forum about a Michelle mention in the
October 2001 issue of Sports
Illustrated for Kids:
Your ever vigilant
magazine-mention searcher has flushed out a new mention: on pg.
48-49 there is an illustration (cartoon) with multiple athletes...it's
titled "All-Star Halloween Bash" (the "joke" is that they are in
costumes). Michelle is cartooned as a member of Destiny's Child.
Angela Nikodinov and Sarah Hughes are cartooned wrestling (unsuccessfully)
for Michelle's one-n-only microphone. It says in caption: Back-up
skaters, um, singers, Sarah Hughes and Angela Nikodinov finish behind
champion Michelle Kwan year after year. Guess that makes Michelle
"Destiny's Child". Cute pic.
tteller sent me a scan
of the picture. Check
it out! (Thanks tteller!)
In
the Sept 22-28, 2001 issue of the TV
Guide, Michelle is mentioned in the cheers
and jeers section. Under "cheers", it says that the
Goodwill Games live coverage was great because it, "gave viewers
the opportunity to see world-class efforts from superstars Marion
Jones, Ian Thorpe and Michelle Kwan as they were happening, rather
than half a day-or more-later." In some editions of the magazine
was a picture of
Michelle, but not mine, oh well. (Thanks Googoo!)

- Article about the
presentation at Brian Boitano's last Champions on Ice performance

earlier. Some of the article can be found on BOI's
old news page. About Michelle, the article says: The final
presentation, a Baccarat crystal vase, something that "would
go in your home in San Francisco, so you can remember us,"
Collins said, was presented by Michelle Kwan, "if she doesn't
cry." Kwan, obviously very emotional, said no, she wasn’t
going to cry, but after she handed the beautiful crystal vase
to Boitano her voice cracked as she said, "It's been too
emotional the last two days. When I was seven years old, I was
watching Brian Boitano compete and I can honestly say I wouldn't
be here if it weren't for you. You’ve been an inspiration, a role
model and now I'm honored to say you're one of my closest friends
and I'm going to miss you."...pages 66-69

Jackie Stiles, and Venus Williams.

World championship this season, Kwan is among the all-time greats
of figure skating. She hopes to capture gold in Salt Lake City."
