tteller posted the following on the MK Forum about an ad for Michelle's "Skating Dreams" books in Disney magazine: (Thanks tteller!) Page 14 of the Disney Adventures magazine dated June 2001 is a full page color ad for the (currently) five-volume set of books called "Skating Dreams". There is a well-known picture of Michelle in the middle of the ad that essentially matches the back of each volume in the series. There are five small pictures of all 5 of the covers. The headline says "Michelle Kwan presents...".
CaraMora posted the following on the MK Forum about Michelle appearing in Mutual Funds Magazine: (Thanks CaraMora!) Michelle is in Mutual Funds mag June 2001 on page 96, the last page. There is a pic of her in her gold costume and it says Star Stand-In AIM Constellation gained only 8.8% over three years, vs. 24% for peers. Its quest for star performers may explain Michelle Kwan's appearance in its TV ads. But if the fund doesn't turn around soon, AIM may be skating on thin ice. I like who they say Michelle is a star.
nessie2002 posted on the MK Forum that Michelle was mentioned in the May issue of Tiger Beat. In the "Stargazing" section it says, "LOOKING FORWARD - Though figure skater Michelle Kwan suffered a disappointment in losing the Grand Prix finals to Russian skater Irina Slutskaya, this perky perfectionist is looking ahead to a bigger prize - the gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah." Included is a picture of her standing on what looks like a rocky/sandy beach. (Thanks nessie2002!)

I just received my June 2001 issue of Ladies Home Journal and on page 20 there is a small article asking 3 Famous daughters what they have given there dad's for father's day and Michelle is one of them!!!!!! There is a small picture of her and underneath it says:"My dad's passion is fishing. This year I bought him a great rod and reel. But how do I top that next year?"
ToddFan posted on the MK Forum that there is an article about Michelle in Investor's Business Daily. The article was titled "Ice Skater Michelle Kwan: Determination Keeps her Leaping Higher," in the A4 "Leaders and Success" section. (Thanks ToddFan!)
Michelle is mentioned in the April 9, 2001 issue of Time magazine. She is in the Winners and Losers section (of course she is listed under winners!) Here is what they say about Michelle: (Thanks luenatic!) MICHELLE KWAN Kicking jitters, America's sweetheart wins back gold at world skating championships
tteller posted the following on the MK Forum about Michelle being in the April issue of Nickelodeon magazine (Thanks tteller!) : Yes, Michelle is on the POSTER that is featured in the new Nickelodeon magazine, dated April 2001! There are "headshots" [close-ups of the faces/shoulders] of the nominees for the 2001 Nickelodeon Kids Awards on a ~16X20" poster inside the magazine. Michelle's picture looks like it was a picture from a year ago (by the hair-do).
In the Philadelphia Inquirer, they have a feature, where they list on the top of the second page of the sports section 3 things: the athlete to watch for the day, the local athlete to watch for the day, and a quotable. With each, they have a picture of the person. In the March 21 edition, the quotable was Michelle! Her quote was "....When you skate like a dead horse, nothing happens." The picture was when she bowed after her long program at Nationals, shown here.
There is an article about Michelle in the March 26, 2001 issue of Newsweek! You can read the article, Michelle’s Next Turn, online now.
In the March 24-30 issue of the TV Guide, there are two Michelle mentions. On page 10 is a half page article titled "Ice Cold War" about Worlds. With the article is a picture of Michelle doing a layback during Song of the Black Swan at Skate Canada. Then, there is a closeup for Worlds on page 102. In the closeup is a picture of Michelle doing a spiral during East of Eden at Nationals.
I received my April 2001 issue of Blades on Ice today. The Michelle mentions in this magazine:

  • Editorial on skating injuries which quotes Frank talking about injuries, and then writes "'Where's the blood?' Michelle Kwan laughed apparently at one of Carroll's quips. But she said she's been pretty lucky with injuries. 'The only major one was that stress fracture in my left foot (1998). There's a point when you don't know how hard to push yourself when preparing for a competition--sometimes you overdo it. I was doing triple Salchow/triple loop and I was doing it pretty good, but I was doing it over and over and my back started hurting and I thought, 'It's not worth it right now.'"....page 9
  • Article on Nationals. Includes a nice picture from Song of the Black Swan...page 44-52

tteller posted the following Michelle sightings on the MK Forum: (Thanks tteller!)

Your ever vigilant reporter has got some new info:

1. Michelle is pictured twice in the new Mar/Apr 2001 Sports Illustrated For Women (two straight issues!!!) in an article about the 02 SLC Olympics/Sarah Hughes. There is a podium picture from 01 Nationals with Sarah and Michelle. There is also a smaller picture of Michelle mid-jump during the Black Swan program at 01 Nationals with a line under that says something like "Michelle's skating at Nationals was some her best skating ever."

2. The fifth (who knew??????) book in the Skating Dreams series is out. It's titled "Winning Edge" and features more Qs/As (did you know MK keeps her Olympic Medal in a safe-deposit box in a bank?!) and another postcard in the middle of the book, this one featuring Michelle on the podium of 2000 Skate America holding high a bouquet of flowers (this might be the best picture so far used in the series). AND the front of book states that Book #6, "Coaches Choice" will be out soon. [I purchased the book at Borders in Columbus, OH...they had the whole series. That plus the fact that they are producing books # 5 & 6 makes me think the series must be doing okay sales-wise.] There's also an interesting commentary on the inside back cover by Michelle that takes about skating and competition with another skater.

Snow posted the following on the MK Forum about Michelle appearing in the March 2001 ROB (Report on Business) Magazine : (Thanks Snow!))

While flipping through the March 2001 ROB (Report on Business) Magazine, I found that there is a small Michelle picture (Rachmaninoff opening pose) on page 11. The page is a calendar of events for March and for March 21st, it writes "Opening day of women's competition at the World Figure Skating Championships in Vancouver - the clash of triple-jump queens Michelle Kwan and Irina Slutskaya." Just found it interesting that Michelle even appears in a BUSINESS magazine! Seems that she appears everywhere in the media these days.

Chris e-mailed me the following about Michelle being in the March 2001 issue of Sports Illustrated for Kids (Thanks Chris!):

In the magazine, there is a full page pic. of her doing a triple jump in mid-air, during her "Song of the Black Swan" program. The jump is taken during the U.S. Nationals were a a summary talks about her fifth U.S. Title. Then in the calendar section, the magazine talks about the upcoming World Championships were she will try to defend her title against the two russian skaters.
In the February 23 issue (the Oscar issue) of Entertainment Weekly, there is a review for the A&E TV show "Fire on Ice: Champions of American Figure Skating," which includes Michelle. With the review, on page 153, is a picture of Michelle doing a layback during East of Eden at Nationals. Here is the (not so good) review:

Professional cutie pie/Olympic medalist Peggy Fleming says that figure skating requires a blend of "artistry and athleticism." So does filmmaking. Fire and Ice starts strong as a documentary—the 1961 plane crash that killed America’s skating team is of particular note—but quickly skates onto thin ice with its mix of pulpy narrative (“The plots of Sonja Henie’s films were as skimpy as her skirts”) and sour grapes (“That Katarina Witt flirted with the audience!”). Surely, even Michelle Kwan herself would find this two-hour-yawn-fest only about as stirring as a night at the Ice Capades.“ C-
I received my March/April 2001 issue of International Figure Skating in the mail the other day. Here are the mentions of Michelle in the magazine:

  • 2001 COI ad...page 3

  • Picture backstage at the Canadian Open with Sarah Hughes and Josee Chouinard...page 27
  • Article about Angela Nikodinov, which states that she trains part time at El Segundo, "There, she gets the bonus of working alongside Michelle Kwan and Timothy Goebel."...page 54

tteller posted the following on the MK Forum : (Thanks tteller!)

Michelle is pictured on the back page of the March issue of Family PC. The picture from her poster (Lyra Angelica) is on their calander with a reference to the Worlds in March and www.iskater.com.
Jason posted the following on the MK Forum about an article in the February 3 edition of the LA Times (Thanks Jason!): In the Olympic Scene section written by Helene Elliott, Michelle is mentioned. Paraphrasing the article to avoid copyright infringement. Web detective, work your stuff! Talks about a banner being hung to honor Timmy and Michelle at Healthsouth. Talks about how 4 of the 6 top ladies at Nats train at Healthsouth. Talks about summer program with Frank (I'm guessing this is where some of our resident skaters go to give us summer news?) Talks about how Michelle resumed practicing 3sal/3loop that she skipped at Nats...Speculates that she might perform it at GPF on Feb 15-18 (yes yes yes!). It also says, interestingly, that MK and Tim are working on an addition LP each of them needs for the GPF. Whether it's a new program or not, I don't know. Here's hoping. Hmm...now I'm excited.
I received my January 2001 issue of Skating Magazine in the mail the other day. (This magazine is only available by subscription.) Here are the mentions of Michelle in the magazine:

  • Ad for ABC's coverage this year, with a picture of Michelle doing a spiral from Beautiful World...back cover

Michael posted on the MK Forum that Michelle was mentioned in the January 22, 2001 issue of US Weekly. In the TV listings for this week, for Saturday, says "US Figure Skating Championships 9:00 Michelle Kwan goes for the gold during the free skate, live from Boston's Fleet Center."
There is a small picture of Michelle skating to Beautiful World.
(Thanks Michael!)
Chris e-mailed me that Michelle is in the January/February issue of Sports Illustrated for Kids. She is mentioned in the calendar section were the magazine talks about the upcoming U.S. Championships in Boston. (Thanks Chris!)
Kimberly posted the following on the MK Forum about a Michelle mention in the latest issue of Teen People (Thanks Kimberly!): I got February issue of Teen People today in the mail. Michelle is mentioned on the calendar page.(pg. 56) There is a very small picture of Michelle during the spiral and I can't see what program it is by the costume. It's on the February 10th. It says "Michelle Kwan laces up for the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships (ABC)". It's an error, unless Michelle is actually skating in the competition which is not very likely.

Michelle will not be doing the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, so this was an error on Teen People's part. Also, the picture in the magazine is from the opening number of the 2000 COI tour.

Pear posted on the MK Forum that there is a picture of Michelle with a quote in the January 2001 issue of Ladies' Home Journal. Leigh later posted on the forum what exactly was in the magazine (Thanks Pear and Leigh!): A few famous people were asked what their New Year's resolution is and what their strategy is to make it stick. Michelle's reply was "To be more tolerant of other people's emotions, especially when they've had a terrible day or are in a bad mood". Strategy: "By having more patience and becoming a better listener".

Jskate posted on the MK Forum that Michelle is on the cover of the January/February 2001 issue of Sports Illustrated for Women! Jskate wrote that in the interview, Michelle talks about school, the triple sal-triple loop combo, the 2002 Olympics, the judges, critics and her boyfriend. The magazine goes on sale in the middle of January. There are seven pictures in the magazine, three of which Jskate scanned in:

Also, here are some of the quotes from the article (Thanks Jskate!):

On her competitors:
"This is a new generation of skates. They're all doing triple-triples and I have to keep up. It comes to the point where you have to risk it. It can be the difference between first and second."

On grace in '98:
Even now parents come up to me and say, 'The way you handled your loss in Nagano made you a great role model for my kids.' But it wasn't anything I had to work on. I mean, I didn't hide anything. I was upset I didn't win; I was crying afterward. But what are you going to do, hit the wall about it? I was lucky enough to have parents who taught me about sportsmanship."

On social life:
The boyfriend is a first, it is a long distance relationship. He's not a local and not a skater and that's all she shares.

On School:
"Sometimes school can be a good distraction from skating. And sometimes skating can be a good distraction from school. But right now I'm behind in my studies... I'm changing my long program and I'm trying to learn a new jump. It's a lot. It's hard to play the catch-up game all the time.

On going pro and lack of motivation and criticism:
"I wouldn't be out there three times a day in the cold if I didn't care. I stayed eligible for the Olympics because I do care. I like the pressure. I like being pushed. In the pros people are always telling you how perfect you are. I can still handle being criticized and analyzed. It can be harsh though. I've heard remarks about my speed, the speed of my spins, my jumps. I hear everything, right down to how I point my little finger."

Also, regarding the 3sal-3loop, Michelle is paraphrased saying this will be the most difficult jump combination she has attempted and she says she needs to land it to win.

I received my copy of the January/February 2001 issue of International Figure Skating yesterday. Here are the mentions of Michelle in the magazine: (Thanks to Liz for the article scans!)

  • Ad for Ice Castle, with a picture of Michelle doing a spiral in Hands...page 3
  • Chevrolet Scholarship ad...page 14
  • Article about Michelle titled "Michelle Kwan's Skating Dreams." Includes two photos, one from Song of the Black Swan, and one from Beautiful World. Liz scanned in the article...page 15

  • Small article on her Chevrolet Scholarship...page 50
  • Article about Ryan Bradley, who talks about being partnered with Michelle at the Keri Lotion FS Classic. He says, "Michelle is such a positive person in everything that she does. She made me feel I was a really important part of the team."...page 56

CaraMora posted on the MK Forum that Michelle is in the January 2001 issue of Seventeen magazine. They are talking about a website, and itt says chat live with celebs like Michelle Kwan and Mandy Moore etc, with the title, web calendar. One of the pics from the December issue of Seventeen is included, the one of Michelle holding a blue shawl.
