It says that he worked on the costumes for Michelle's Mulan special and that one of his designs is in Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum (Michelle wears her Ariane costume, which he designed.) The article also states that he rarely works with eligible skaters because they tend to want too much of everything on the costumes. "The exceptions have been Paul Wylie, Lu Chen, and Michelle Kwan. Not coincidentally, all are considered elegant skaters."...page 64-69
  • Small article about Michelle being a finalist for the WSF's Sportswoman of the Year Award with the same A Day in the Life picture mentioned earlier, but in color...page 81

She is working hard towards the 2002 Winter Olympics and I wish her all the luck in the world."...page 12-15
  • Ad for Ice Castle, with a picture of Michelle doing a spiral in Hands...page 41

CaraMora posted on the MK Forum that the Chevrolet R.E.W.A.R.D.S Scholarship ad is also in the December 2000 issue of YM, on the inside of the back cover. (Thanks CaraMora!)
mano posted the following on the MK Forum about Michelle being in the Holiday 2000 issue of In Style Entertaining Magazine! (Thanks mano!)

It's a small pic of her on page 51 of the Holiday 2000 issue with Sela Ward on the cover. The magazine asks "Who Do You Want to Have Over for Dinner?" She's on the bottom left hand side of the page and she says:

"Michael Jordan, I respect him a lot. As an athlete, I can understand the pressures that he's had, and I'd like to meet him and talk to him about being a role model. Or Brad Pitt, but he's taken."

For some reason that quote seems familiar to me. Her pic is slightly similar to this one I got from Heather's page (link from amandadupre) from the Cell Premiere.

Beth posted the following on the MK Forum that Michelle is in the November 20 issue of People magazine. She wrote that Michelle "was talking about some certain boots!!" I went to People's site, and saw the contents of the magazine list under the "Style" section "Thanks to shoe designer Sandra Choi, Jimmy Choos are tops with trendy toes." Beth later posted the question asked was "What style item would you love to own but would never buy for yourself?" Michelle answered; "I really love the look of those tall, high boot with heels, but they're really made for people who have long legs, so I wouldn't ever buy them." There was also a pic of Michelle from The Cell premiere in the magazine. (Thanks Beth!)
Angela e-mailed me that the Chevrolet R.E.W.A.R.D.S Scholarship ad is also in the December 2000/January 2001 issue of Teen People, on page 127. (Thanks Angela!)
Dennis e-mailed another magazine mentions with Michelle! Check it out: (Thanks Dennis!) Michelle is in the 10th anniversary issue of Disney Adventures Magazine. She is in the review of the last 10 years from 1990-2000 and on February of 1998, there's a picture of Michelle and Tara Lipinski at the 1997 Worlds podium. The caption is something to the effect of: "Michelle Kwan captures silver as Tara Lipinski wins gold at the 1998 Olympics."

tteller posted on the MK Forum that Michelle is in the November/December 2000 issue of Sports Illustrated for Women. There is a section where they ask "If you could trade places with any athlete, who would you pick?" One of the answers was:

Michelle Kwan . She has shown the world that figure skaters can be tough, exciting and competitive. She's the ideal representative for the United States at the Winter Olympics.

There's also a head shot of Michelle from the 1999 Nationals podium in her Ariane costume. Michelle's was the only athlete they had a picture of. Check out the article, Superstar for a Day online, though without the picture. (Thanks tteller!)

rabasac e-mailed me two more magazine mentions with Michelle! The first one is in the November 2000 issue of Entertainment Teen. She under the section called Girls Night Out". The magazine shows a picture of Michelle wearing a tan slip dress.

The second magazine mentions is in the December 2000 issue of Marie Claire. The magazine contains the ad for the Michelle Kwan/Chevrolet Scholarship Program that is also in the current issue of Seventeen magazine. (Thanks rabasac!)

CaraMora posted on the MK Forum that Michelle is in the December issue of Seventeen Magazine!! Here's what she posted on the forum (Thanks CaraMora!) : Michelle is in seventeen mag Dec. issue it is so cool She is in the scoop section and there are tons of pics of her trying on clothes and she talks about how she likes accesories inclucing hoop earings and she says purses are her obession. there are two pages full of her trying on clothes. And there is another Chevy ad there is now a Chevy/Michelle Kwan Scholarship for student atheletes. It has a pic of her sitting at a desk with her ice skates on it's really cool. I so happy I finally got my ifs and then I opened up seventeen not expecting Mk to be in there because they don't have atheletes in there a lot and now she is on 3 pages...This issue will be out in a little bit but I have a subscription and I'm not sure how much sooner I get my issue. All I'm going to say is it is a must have. They have 9 pics of her. In 6 she's trying on different accessories like bracelets, bandanas, and purses and they have 3 of her trying on different dresses. The Chevy ad is right after the article it is a really cute ad. There is also a swimmer and a soccer player I'm not sure if their are famous because they are in the background. But it is an ad about a student athelete scholorship. I don't have a scanner but I have a friend who does so I'm going to try to get these scanned and put up for you all by hopefully tom, but I'm not promising anything.

I received my copy of the November/December issue of International Figure Skating yesterday. Here are the mentions of Michelle in the magazine:

  • Ad for Ice Castle, with a picture of Michelle doing a spiral in Hands...page 7
  • Photo of Michelle with Karen at the Ice Castle reception this summer...page 24
  • Article about Ottavio Cinquanta and the future of the ISU. Ottavio said, "We are giving an excellent product in skating. Last year in Nice we gave terrific, dramatic finals of the ladies' and mens' events. Michelle Kwan and Alexei Yagudin becoming champions. What more can we do?" Includes a picture of Michelle with Ottavio Cinquanta...page 36
  • Article about Ann Patrice McDonough which says that "she cites skating icons Michelle Kwan and Scott Hamilton as her role models."...page 54

Another magazine mention of Michelle! CaraMora posted the following on the MK Forum (Thanks CaraMora!):

Michelle is in the Oct. issue of teen style mag. It's a pic of her at the blockbuster awards. It shows dress like Michelle's outfit that most people can afford. I don't have a scanner so I can't scan a pic for you all.
mano posted the following on the MK Forum about Michelle being in the recent issue of People magazine (Thanks mano!):

She is on People Magazine, the Oct. 23 issue in the Style Watch section with Celine Dion in front. They were talking about open toed shoes and featured her pic from the Titans premiere. It's the same shoes she wore for the premiere of The Cell. Apparently that "peek-a-boo" style is hot right now.
I received my October 2000 issue of Skating Magazine in the mail yesterday. (This magazine is only available by subscription.) Here are the mentions of Michelle in the magazine:

  • Ad for Ice Castle, with a picture of Michelle doing a spiral in Hands...page 2

The first paragraph says, "Three-time World Champion Michelle Kwan, fresh off the stunning performance at the 2000 World Championships, returns to the ISU Grand Prix of figure skating at Skate America in Colorado Springs, Colo., Oct. 26-29. Kwan is one of the many top names in figure skating who will kick off the ISU Grand Prix season at the Colorado Springs World Arena." Includes a picture of Michelle doing a layback from A Day in the Life...page 10
  • Short articles about Michelle's wax figure, which includes this picture...page 13
  • Article about the 2000-2001 season. About Michelle, it says, "Kwan is the best in the world--she proved that without a doubt at the World Championships in Nice, France. After enduring months of criticism about her skating and lack of fire, she dug deep within herself to pull out one of her greatest performances ever. She was the only one of the top three ladies to successfully complete a triple-triple combination at Worlds--dispelling even more talk that she had lost her technical edge. The 20-year old college student is clearly the favorite for her fifth US title this year, but she knows it's not going to be easy. Still, Kwan has shown again and again that she can fight with the best when her back is against the wall." Includes a picture from A Day in the Life...page 22-24
  • 2001 Nationals Ad with a picture of Michelle from Ariane...page 69
  • Ad for ABC's coverage this year, with a picture of Michelle doing a layback from A Day in the Life...back cover

Olympic Silver medalist Kwan is among those skaters gliding into our homes.

  • 2000 Skate America Ad with a picture from A Day in the Life...page 2
  • Two short articles, one about Michelle's wax figure, the other about Michelle's new house. Includes a picture of Michelle with her wax statue...page 68

Several people posted on the MK Forum that Michelle is in the September/October 2000 issue of Sports Illustrated for Women! A picture of Michelle with her wax figure is on page 33, and is about a third of the page. There is also 2 page spread for a poll asking who the Sportswoman of the Year 2000 is, which you can vote on by going to State Farm's site. Michelle is also named in the reader's section "Who's your favorite alltime Olympian?" Here's what one reader wrote in about her:

Skater Michelle Kwan [1998]. The grace and maturity she showed at Nagano are unsurpassed. -- Barbara Loftus, South Amboy, N.J. Also, CaraMora posted on the MK Forum that iIn the calendar section, under "must see tv," they have Skate America as one of the events to watch, with Michelle and Sarah Hughes listed as the favorites. (Thanks CaraMora!)
Rachel posted on FSW that Michelle is in the September issue of National Geographic World. In honor of the magazine's 25th anniversary, in the "Kids Did It" section, they did follow-ups on some of the kids who were featured in earlier issues of the magazine. There is a photo of Michelle from 1993, and one of her skating to Hands at Worlds this year, which was in the Chevrolet ad. (Thanks Rachel!)
I finally received my copy of the September/October issue of International Figure Skating. Here are the mentions of Michelle in the magazine:

Another magazine mention! Michelle is mentioned in the Dos & Don'ts special issue of Glamour magazine. It is on newsstands now. Jen e-mailed me the following: (Thanks Jen!)

I wanted to let you know that Michelle is in the special Dos & Don'ts edition of Glamour magazine this month, it has Claudia Schiffer and her boyfriend on the front. I didn't buy the mag yet, but it's a picture of the coral snakeskin outfit she wore to the [Blockbuster Entertainment Awards] and she's talking about what makes her feel like a "Glamour Do"...she basically says that because she's petite, she likes things that make her feel taller and such.
There is an article about Michelle's autograph, with several pictures, in the Chinese World Journal. amei posted the following on the MK Forum (Thanks amei!):

On Sunday, she was on Chinese World Journal, a Chinese news paper with the largest readership among Chinese Americans. It was a series about celebrity's handwritings. Title of the article was, Little girls grew up. That article analyzed both Drew Barrymore and Michelle's. The beautiful part is that the author collected Michelle's autographs since Michelle was 14, and there are 6 photos with her autographs. (wow!)

luenatic later posted on the MK Forum a translation of the article:

OK, this is my poor attempt to translate the article:

"Let me introduce another celebrity to you. It doesn't matter if you're Chinese or American, we all love Michelle Kwan - Queen of the Ice. She is also a star that we watch her growing up in front of us.

Since Michelle is a little girl, she always works hard. She is kind and polite. She never gives up and she is never arrogant. Everybody clearly understands (?? my note: maybe appreciates is more appropriate here?) her hard work and her success. Her autograph style shows just that (her personality).

Since she made her name on the figure skating scene at the age of 14, I started collecting her autograph. Her autograph is a very standard, smooth hand writing style. Her first name links together with her last name, but you can always tell the capital letters (in M & K). Her autograph mostly is one straight line going upward. Only when space is limited, the autograph will be divided into 2 lines with the last name on the second line. She has a habit of putting a little heart on top of the letter "M". She has the same autograph style since 14, 15...... Up until now, the basic doesn't change much. Recently, the "K" in her last name becomes a big circle though.

Her autograph shows her personality: Once she locks in her target, she'll go right at it and will never change course half way. From her autograph, you can see her success and her strength."

I received my August/September 2000 issue of Skating Magazine in the mail today. (This magazine is only available by subscription.) Here are the mentions of Michelle in the magazine:

She said that Michelle "is a beautiful jumper and she skates from her heart, always with a smile on her face. She makes it seem like she's having fun competiting and it's no sweat for her." She also said that meeting Michelle was "an amazing experience for me!"...page 62
  • Ad for usfsa.org...page 69
  • Ad for Ice Castle, with a picture of Michelle doing a spiral in Hands...page 75
  • ABC Ad that congratulates the 2000 US Team...back cover

There is an article and pictures of Michelle at the Cover Girl & Seventeen Volunteers Awards in the September 2000 issue of Seventeen magazine! CaraMora posted the following on the MK Forum (Thanks CaraMora!)

Michelle is in Seventeen mag the Sept issue. She's is in two pics it's about her being at that Volunteerism award show with Faith Hill. She looks cute in the pics and there is a quote from her about what she said about the girls.

"Here we are honoring these amazing people, and not one of them expected it," says Kwan. "That's the special thing about volunteerism it's all about giving and not just getting."

eilaram scanned in the pictures from the magazine and sent them to me. Check them out (Thanks eilaram!):

Michelle is in the July 31 issue of US Weekly. Sailorvi00 posted on the following on the MK Forum (Thanks Sailorvi00!)

I just got my US Weekly, the one with Michelle Pfeiffer on the cover, there is a picture of Michelle Kwan and her wax statue under "Faces and Places"/"Out and About." She is kind of leaning over and pointing at the statue's back.

I got the magazine today and scanned it in. Check it out!

Michelle is in the July 24, 2000 issue of Sports Illustrated! tteller posted on the MK Forum (Thanks tteller!)

Michelle and her Madame T's wax statue are featured in a brief mention and (well known) photo of them posing together. Under a section called "Mixed Doubles" on page 30 is the well known close-up picture of her and wax Michelle with the following words words: "Michelle Kwan poses next to her wax replica, which will go on display later this year at Madame Tussaud's New York."
Michelle is in the August issue of In Style magazine! The magazine goes on sale Friday, July 21. mkfantoo posted the following on the MK Forum. (Thanks mkfantoo!)

I just got my August issue of InStyle (Elizabeth Hurley is on the cover) and our girl is in the section called The Look on page 67. Michelle is wearing the coral snakeskin outfit and the picture must be from the Blockbuster awards. It's a full length picture of MK (although it's not very big) and the caption reads "Michelle Kwan in Vertigo." Vertigo is the designer of her outfit. The other celebs on that page include Sarah Michelle Gellar, Gretchen Mol, and Lori Loughlin. They're all wearing snakeskin pants. The best part is that they didn't identify her as "Figure skater Michelle Kwan", but just as Michelle Kwan!!!
greenwolf wrote the following on the MK Forum: (Thanks greenwolf!)

In The August issue of Premiere magazine there is an article on movie quotes. On page 68-69 Cameron Crowe writer-director of "Jerry Maguire" talks about how he thought the line from the movie would be when "Rod Tidwell was talking about "the Kwan" - his own personal coinage for the combination of love, respect, and money." but instead it was "Show me the money."

Here's the quote about Michelle: "But I've always held a soft spot for the unnoticed concept of "Kwan." Some time later, during an Olympic performance by ice-skater Michelle Kwan, a friend called and told me to turn on the television. In the middle of a huge crowd, a lonely fan held up a sign reading SHOW ME THE KWAN. Thank you for that"

I received my August 2000 issue of Blades on Ice today. The Michelle mentions in this magazine:

  • 2000 Skate America Ad with a picture from A Day in the Life...page 2
  • Article on Linda Fratianne, another Olympic silver medalist who was coached by Frank Carroll. She says "But it's amazing the drive and desire someone like Michelle Kwan has--of course I'm a huge fan of hers, what with her taking lessons from Frank Carroll. The older you get, the tougher it gets. You have to admire her for getting better and better every year--I've been there too, and to throw school on top of it, too, it's amazing." She also says how Frank's reaction backstage at Worlds this year (after Maria and Irina had skated, but before Sarah skated, Michelle knew she was in first, went over to hug Frank, but he said that it wasn't over) reminded her of how he acted when she won Worlds (he did the same thing)...page 16-19
  • Article on Frank Carroll. He says Michelle "is an extremely intelligent girl, and we discuss everything. I think I am more reasonable with her. We are both Cancers, and amazingly alike. We take in what people tell us, and then do what we think is right. We both like our privacy and need our environment to be comfortable. We both like to put our energy into now, the task at hand and not think far ahead." He later says that he looks forward to the next season with Michelle, "She is very happy with school and her environment, and training on Olympic ice at HealthSouth has already helped her speed. Her practices have taken a different turn and she knows pretty skating will only take you so far." There is also a picture of Frank coaching Michelle (who is in working on a layback) in 1993, and one of her from now. Michelle says, "I met Frank for the first time at 1992 sectionals where my dad was helping me because we couldn't afford a coach, but once you reach a certain level you really need one. I had terrible training habits back then. I think the key to my success comes from the discipline and training that I have learned from Frank. He understands what I am going through as a skater. We do have a different relationship on and off the ice. There are certain boundaries he doesn't want to cross with my life off ice since I have my own father."...page 20-25
  • Article on "the millennial season," including lots on Michelle. One cute thing from the article, "She loved the way her randomly assigned roommate in the dorm did not know she was the skater Michelle Kwan until they actually met, despite having talked on the phone several times. 'Michelle Kwan is a common name, after all,' said Kwan." Includes 3 pictures of Michelle. One color photo is of her skating Red Violin in the free skate. Another color photo is from the post Worlds party, with Irina and Maria. The third is a black and white photo from the same party, with just Irina...page 34-42
  • Small article about the PSA awards that mentions the unveiling of the statue with Michelle (though no picture.)...page 43
  • Article on Champions on Ice Tour. Includes a picture of Michelle with Todd Eldredge and Tom Collins, and a full page color photo from the finale of COI...page 44-54
  • Small article on Michelle being the USOC athlete of the month, with a picture of Michelle in the kiss and cry at worlds after her long program...page 89
  • 2001 Nationals Ad with a picture of Michelle from Ariane...page 99

yingshan posted on the MK Forum that Michelle was mentioned in the July 3-9, 2000 issue of SportsBusiness Journal. The article is about the SAG strike forcing Olympic athletes to not film commercials. Michelle is complying with the strike by not filming any Chevrolet commercials. There was also a nice picture of Michelle with the article. I hope the strike is over soon, as I want to see Michelle's Chevrolet ads (as it is, I haven't seen her ESPN commercial yet!)
Another magazine mention! San351 e-mailed me that in the July 2000 issue of Allure magazine, there is an interview with Sarah Jessica Parker on page 126. Here's what Sarah has to say about skating: (Thanks San351!)

"I live for ice-skating," SJP says. Then she frowns. "Tara Lipinski. Grrr." Then she smiles again. "Michelle Kwan! Michelle Kwan is my hero. She's so smart and beautiful and graceful and levelheaded. She works so hard. She's earned everything."
I finally received the July/August 2000 issue of International Figure Skating. Unlike the last few months, there is a lot of Michelle in this month's magazine. In fact, she is on the Cover! Every picture is beautiful. The cover photo, and photos with the cover article, are from the same photo shoot that produced this photo from Cosmogirl. The article is really nice, and 4 pages long. In the article, Michelle says that she is glad she cut her hair in the summer of '98, but is happy to be growing it out now. Also, as I wrote earlier, Michelle is on the magazine's most influential list for this season. Here are the mentions of Michelle in the magazine:

  • Cover
  • Picture from photo shoot on table of contents page...page 3
  • In the "from the publisher" section...page 6: "Although we present alphabetically our selections of the 25 most influential, our cover subject certainly could be perceived as the most influential of the season--three time World Champion Michelle Kwan. Since her debut on the world scene, in 1994, Kwan has been pivotal in the development of the sport. It's no secret that the mere thought of Kwan turning pro last year sent a chill through the boardrooms of television networks and sports federations around the world. Her influence carries that far. Through all her highs and lows as an elite skater and student, Kwan believes in herself. She is perhaps one of the most focused people I have ever met, and one of the most gracious. But the thing that sets Kwan apart from the rest is that she is a realist. As she says to IFS, 'We are all human.' The humanity and spirit have taken Kwan on an incredible journey through this unpredictable sport. Her staying power and strength often have her competitors shaking before they even step onto the ice. Whether she wins or not, the fact that Kwan is competing is bound, on some level, to affect the outcome for all involved. Having transcended the demands of sport and school, Kwan enjoys the challenges and risks of both and, through it all, carries herself with an unmatched sportsmanship and approach to life."
  • Letters to the editor, with 6 letters who were "appalled" with the lack of coverage of Michelle at Nationals in last month's issue, and defending Michelle winning Nationals...page 8
  • Cover article, titled, "Center Stage." Includes 6 pictures from the photo shoot, plus a picture of Michelle doing a spiral during A Day in the Life...page 18-21
  • Michelle on the 25 most influential names in figure skating list. Here is what it says about Michelle: "I think the single best performance of the whole season had to be Michelle Kwan's freeskate at the World Championships," notes Dick Button. "It was a beautiful performance from many different points of view. It was not only an interesting and elegant program, and it was not only technically first-rate, it also had that extra added performance quotient that raised it above the very good level to great." Even when not delivering her best performances, Kwan, 20, is a fan favorite. She is sought out by corporate sponsors, including a lucrative long-term endorsement with Chevrolet, announced at the 2000 U.S. National Championships, in Cleveland. Her presence is desired by event producers, who know that her name will sell tickets and draw television viewers. This year, she chose to balance college with skating, and at times her skating suffered. But when April 1 came, she was no fool, as she showed the world she figured out how to stop saying she was going to do it and just did it. The result was her third World title and the respect and adoration of millions. Kwan says her season's highlight was the period of time leading up to her triumphant performance. "The time in between Nationals and Worlds was a big highlight for me," she says. "Not many people saw it. It was the change I felt inside...just different. I think that's the biggest thing. I think school played an important role in this year," she adds. "Not to say skating meant less. I realized that It meant a lot. But I realized It's not everything. It's not life," Kwan reminds people that skating takes a lot of heart and soul, and when heart and soul are involved, anything is possible. "There's a lot of talk in figure skating--in life in general--like gossip," she warns. "It all doesn't matter because It's all predictions. But predictions are never right," Indeed, she fooled all the predictors on April 1 and once again rules the sport. The picture of Michelle is from the same cover story photo shoot...page 43
  • With Timothy Goebel, Angela Nikodinov, and Naomi Lang at Worlds...page 48
  • With US team at 2000 USFSA spring pro-am...page 49
  • Article on Worlds, titled "Shake, Rattle, and Gold." Includes a photo of Michelle landing her final jump during her Red Violin free program...page 62-64
